A dingbat file is a set of shapes created in the same format as a font file. Your computer treats them just like font files.
In fact, you type dingbat shapes using your keyboard just like you do with font characters. Each shape is mapped to a keyboard key.
A common dingbat file that comes with your computer is called "Wingdings." You probably have several dingbat files already installed on your computer because Microsoft operating systems include three or four dingbat files. These include "webdings", wingdings1, wingdings2 and wingdings3.
